Sophomore Molly Malague led all scorers with a game high 28 points along with 10 rebounds for a double-double while junior teammate Chase Klavon added 17 points, 6 steals, 5 assists, and 2 rebounds to lead Metuchen to a 63-44 opening night GMC Blue girls basketball victory over Carteret.
The duo of Metuchen girls accounted for 71 percent of the Lady Bulldogs scoring while knocking down all 8 of the team’s three pointers. Brenda Guzman led the Lady Ramblers in defeat with 22 points while Taija’Ney McCollum chipped in with 15 points as the Carteret duo combined for all five of the team’s three pointers as well as 84 percent of the team’s scoring.
Metuchen outscored Carteret in three of the four periods including a 13-5 edge in the first period. The Lady Bulldogs added to that lead with a 19-11 showing in the 2nd for a 32-16 advantage at the intermission. From there, Metuchen cruised to the opening night win. MHS opens the season at 1-0 overall and in the Blue Division while Carteret starts at 0-1 both overall in divisional play.
